Tigers Hike to 2nd Oldest Train Tunnel

Wednesday, January 9th, 2013
On Sunday, January 6, 2013, Tiger Den 2 started the new year off by enjoying great weather with a nice hike through part of the Patapsco State Park to the Henryton Tunnel, considered by many to be the 2nd oldest active train tunnel in the world.  The tunnel is part of the CSX Old Main Line, the oldest commercial route in the United States, built by the B&O Railroad around 1830 to provide the Port of Baltimore with traffic to the expanding mid-west.  The tunnel was first built around 1850.

Along the way, the boys were greeted with a ‘planned’ surprise by a passing locomotive and the horn of a waving train engineer. Patrick G, Connor S, Josh B, Jonathan H, and Ryan S (shown train watching), and along with Rob Sommerville and Nick Nutting (shown by the tunnel) participated.
